In 2012, Kush introduced the UBK-1, a plugin compressor that caught many by surprise. At a time when most plugin compressors lacked character, UBK-1 brought something fresh. It modeled the aggressive curves Gregory Scott created for the UBK Fatso hardware. UBK-1 became the first plugin to offer ITB producers a tool that emphasized movement and groove. Users could quickly dial in useful, unexpected sounds by simply turning a few knobs. Now, UBK-2 builds on the strengths of the original. It keeps the same intuitive controls, like the large knob for compression, preset attack-release-knee curves, and analog-style saturation. If you liked the original, UBK-2 works the same way. However, UBK-2 also gives you more control. It introduces new compression presets, including the smooth low-ratio "Cream" setting for delicate tasks like mix buss compression. You can adjust the attack and release times on all eight compression curves, tailoring them to fit your needs. The curves are tightly matched, so switching between them maintains consistent gain reduction. UBK-2 also adds two newly-tuned saturation engines—one before and one after compression. Each engine is designed to complement different types of transients. The plugin includes a 4-band EQ, powered by Kush’s new Magpha-based algorithms. For easier monitoring, UBK-2 features the Tri-Meter display. First seen in the Silika compressor, this VU meter shows input/output levels, gain reduction, or all three at once. It helps you visualize how your settings affect the signal, making it easier to adjust. UBK-2 offers a significant upgrade over the original. It provides more control, flexibility, and precision while keeping the character and ease that made UBK-1 so popular—even 12 years after its release.
