The Philosophy Behind Smooth Tube EQ

At Tone – Empire, we are deeply passionate about "Sound". To start, we recently set out to bring a vintage unit back to life. Over the course of six months, we carefully rebuilt the hardware, replacing tubes, transformers, and fine-tuning the signal paths. As a result, we created a "Golden Unit" with "Super Powers". Drawing inspiration from this success, we then modeled the circuit using two distinct signal paths. These paths included Sowter and Lundahl transformers, as well as carefully selected vintage valves. The outcome was nothing short of stunning. Building on this foundation, we combined the hardware with a versatile EQ design. This fusion resulted in the creation of a "Monster Tube EQ" in the DSP world. With this hybrid design, the sound can vary from "Clean and Silky" to "Crunchy" saturated tones, offering incredible flexibility.

Two EQ Types for Every Need

  • Type A provides a full-bodied sound, including a deep, rich low end. Consequently, it’s perfect for adding warmth and depth to your tracks.
  • On the other hand, Type B delivers a crunchier sound with enhanced mids and highs. This option, in particular, brings presence and bite, making it ideal for cutting through the mix.
These two EQ types allow the plugin to be used on a wide variety of sound materials, ranging from drums and vocals to piano, strings, bass, synths, and even mastering.

Efficiency and Performance

Next, we focused on optimizing the plugin for processor efficiency. Our goal was to make it processor-friendly for tracking, while also enabling you to run multiple instances without overloading your system. With Black Q Version 2, we’ve achieved just that. Additionally, we introduced oversampling with an option for up to 8x oversampling—if your system can handle the increased CPU load. By choosing the appropriate oversampling level, you can achieve a more analog-like sound, enhancing the overall feel of your mix. We are now excited to see how our customers respond to the improved sound and performance of Black Q V2!
